Day 1

Rainbow Mountain Full Day

Before dawn breaks, we’ll leave Cuzco at four in the morning. Winding paths cut across silent peaks, passing tiny towns tucked into hillsides while light creeps over the horizon. As the sun climbs, golden rays spill across the Andean range, painting sharp ridges in soft fire. Morning meal happens inside a village home - hot drinks, bread, stories shared slowly. Footsteps begin uphill after warmth settles in bones.
At 4,600 meters up, we arrive where the path begins. Crisp air fills our lungs while wide valleys stretch out ahead, dotted with alpacas feeding on grass. Our guide shares tips - easy ones - to handle the thin atmosphere. Starting slow becomes the rhythm, each step calm, unhurried.
A stretch of roughly four kilometers leads forward in one direction. Moving ahead, the path rises slowly, revealing icy peaks far off, while bright earthy mounds surround on both sides. For those needing help going up, mounts can be used instead. As we go, old herding spots appear beside signs of animals living nearby.
At 5,036 meters high, the peak cuts through thin air. Sunlight hits Rainbow Mountain just right - sudden stripes of red, yellow, green, lavender glow like paint spilled wide. Pausing here means cameras click while voices quiet down, eyes drawn to color stacked on rock. The guide speaks slowly about how these layers formed, words mixing with wind gusts. When weather holds steady, a path opens toward Red Valley, offering more ground to wander.
Away from everything, rust-colored hills roll under wide skies. Beyond them stands Ausangate, its slopes heavy with snow, tucked between silent summits. Stillness wraps the land, adding weight to every view. Distance blurs here, letting space speak louder than sound
Footsteps grow light on the way down, leaving space to notice birdsong and shadows shift. A meal sits ready in a village close by, filled with plates of old recipes from these mountains. Rolling back toward Cuzco , tires hum along the road until dusk nears. By late afternoon, everything blends - wind, wide skies, and that sharp mountain calm settling into bones.
